
For verbs that use avere the past participle does not agree with the subject in gender and number. However, there are some cases that differ from this rule.
- Regardless of which auxiliary is being used, the past participle must agree with the direct object pronouns lo, la, li, and le.
Avete visto il libro? Did you see the book?
No, non lo abbiamo visto. No we didn’t see it.
Dove hai comprato i fiori? Where did you buy the flowers?
Li ho comprati al mercato. I bought them at the market.
Hai comprato le patate? Did you buy the potatoes?
Sì, le ho comprate. Yes, I bought them.
Hai visto le tue amiche? Did you see your friends?
Sì, le ho viste. Yes, I saw them.
- The agreement is optional with the direct object pronouns mi, ti, ci, and vi.
Non ci hanno visto/ visti. They didn’t see us.
