“Place” is used here to refer to literal and metaphorical situationsconveying the place where something happens, or moving toward, from, through, etc., a place, a person, or a situation.
Vado a scuola. I’m going to school.
Sono in ufficio. I’m at the office.
Sono di Roma. I’m from Rome.
Emma ha divorziato. Emma got divorced da Renato from Renato.
English is rather strict in the use of prepositions of place. If you are moving toward something you have to use the preposition to or one of its compounds: into, onto, toward, etc.
If you are moving away fromsomething, you have to use the preposition from. Italian is much more flexible in the use of prepositions.
In Italian, prepositions of place do not tell us whether the action regards movement or not, as English prepositions of place often do. Other words in the sentence, especially the verb, convey this information.
Compare the following:
Sono a scuola dalle otto all’una. They are in school from8 A.M. to 1 P.M.
Vanno a scuola a piedi. They walk to school.
In Italian, the preposition is used to express other aspects of one’s position is space. For example, we use a when we talk about being in a position at a point (a casa) and we use in when we place something within a larger area (in Italia).
Class: Italian prepositions – Possession and Specification
Italian prepositions class: Possession and Specification
Thursday Jan 13 at 9:00 AM (Italian time)
Phrases such as “my mother’s cat,” “a marble statue,” “the fear ofwar,” “a ten-month-old baby,” convey the idea that something/someonebelongs to someone or something else, or they add information about aperson or object: what material something is made of, what the object of our emotions is, how old something is, and so on.
To convey possession and specification (the complement that adds information about someone or something), Italian mostly uses the preposition di (and at times con, as English does with with).

About Class
Prepositions are invariable words that link the components of a sentence.
Each preposition can play different functions: “I’m at home”, or “He’s at ease”.
Conversely, different prepositions have similar uses: “in the morning”, “at dawn”. In other cases, it is the verb, noun, or adjective that determines the preposition to be used: “You’re responsible for your deeds.”, “We’ll arrive at London Heathrow”.
These general principles hold for Italian as well. However, in several instances the preposition used in one language is different from the one used in the other.
For example, both Italian and English use di (of ) to qualify or specify characteristics of things and persons: “Parlo della tua amica” (I’m speaking of your friend). But Italian uses a in the expression “Penso a lui”, while English uses of : “I’m thinking of him”.
Keeping in mind, therefore, that general rules do not always hold true, this class wants to show how to use Italian prepositions.
